Under the Olive Tree
Anna Maggio’s beautiful evocation of life, the seasons and food in Puglia, southern Italy, is much more than a simple collection of recipes. It offers the reader a wonderful insight into Pugliese culture and traditions through three generations of Anna’s family, which she acquired during her upbringing in Puglia.
Many of the traditional recipes in the book were never written down but demonstrated by mothers to their daughters, inspired by the changing seasons. Puglia is known for the quality of its olives, vegetables and fruit, and these recipes celebrate the intense favours and colours of locally grown ingredients, cooked simply and deliciously.
Now we have the opportunity of trying out these very personal recipes, using our own imaginations to produce delicious regional dishes, handed down over generations.
The book is enhanced with beautiful pencil and ink illustrations by Emma Hobbins.
Anna Maggio was born in a small village in Puglia, moving to Milan when was ten. She moved to London in the 1970s and now, with her musician husband and children, shares her time between London and ‘Il Paradiso’, her trullo set in an olive grove in Puglia.
