Long Way Home
Dan Jarvis is an MP and a Mayor, but this is not a book about politics. It is a book about service and family – specifically his time serving in the elite Parachute Regiment and the tragic death of his wife Caroline.
While his military career provides the backdrop to some of the book, the real focus is about life, love and death – and everything that goes on in between. It is about making decisions when under extreme pressure, keeping calm and keeping going when coping with the two enormous and very different challenges that Dan has faced – taking on the Taliban in Afghanistan and losing his wife to cancer at a tragically young age.
For a long time, Dan did not want or feel ready to tell his story and though it has been a hard book for him to write, it is a gripping and inspiring one to read. Dan Jarvis served for fifteen years in the army before becoming the first person since World War Two to leave in order to contest a parliamentary by-election. He was first elected as the Labour MP for Barnsley Central in March 2011 and was subsequently awarded an MBE for his service to the Armed Forces. He was elected as Mayor of the Sheffield City Region in May 2018.
Dan will be in conversation at DigiTAL with journalist Charlie Lee-Potter
